How Does Voice Biometrics Work?

This initial template is known as an enrollment template or enrollment voiceprint.

The template is a mathematical representation of the person’s voice and is proprietary to the voice biometrics system. These templates are highly secured and cannot be interpreted without the secret algorithm provided exclusively by the vendor. Further in the process, the original voice recordings are discarded, and a template is utilized for checking the person’s voice for authentication purposes.

The identity of the speaker can be confirmed only if a strong match is found between the templates and the input samples. This is known as the one-to-one match approach, which is incorporated between the enrollment voiceprint and someone claiming to be the enrolled person. There is another type of voice recognition known as one-to-many. In order to find a match, this method compares a voice sample from an unknown identity against a number of enrollment templates. This is known as speaker identification, although the accuracy of this method varies depending on the application and has some limitations.
